Tenuta Coali | The care of artisans in Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella
If you don't know Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, there are two fundamental things to know and which make its soul: stone and wine.
The stone is the pinkish white one called Pietra di Prun, which is extracted from the hills, while the wine is Valpolicella Classico, with all its nuances.
A company that embodies the double soul of Sant'Ambrogio is Tenuta Coali of the Savoia family.
A farm inextricably linked to wine and which bears the stone in its name.
Coali is indeed a dialect word that derives from covoli, cave. The Savoia family has chosen to put the land right in the name of the company and in their art of producing artisanal wines.
A family that has been carrying on the wine tradition since the 1950s, with the grandfather who began working the vineyard and producing wine in the old house that is now the cellar. Since 1996, the passion for the cultivation of wine has become a job, carried out by Marina and her brother Mario, with her cousin Silvia, together with her mother Teresa and her aunt Caterina.
Valpolicella Classico, Valpolicella Classico Superiore, Amarone and Recioto: these are the expressions of the 9 hectares of property, all located in the hills, on terraces created with the typical walls of Valpolicella: marogne.
Producing wines from vineyards in the hills, between 200 and 400 meters high, means having an excellent exposure to the sun, the ideal temperature range that favors the ripening of the bunches and less risk of humidity.
Working in the hills guarantees quality, and involves greater sacrifices because everything must be done by hand. From the harvest to the bottling of the Amarone selection, Tenuta Coali expresses in this its vocation for handmade. It is one of the smallest wineries in all of Valpolicella, which allows it to offer uniqueness and personality to each bottle that comes out of the cellar.
You can feel for yourself all the care of these wine artisans, tasting the Valpolicella Classico Superiore I Pipioni: a wine that ages for 3 years in French oak barrels, from grapes that have been slightly withered for 20%. How to get it? It is available here in the Pagus online shop.
