Le Marognole winery: Opposites attract!

Le Marognole winery: Opposites attract!

25 March 2020

Do you know what marogne means? It is the word we use here around Verona to describe the dry stone walls typical of our rural areas. If you happen to be in Valpolicella, you immediately realize how important they are for our hills and vineyards. Not only do they prevent the soil erosion, but they also drain the water in excess. What does that have to do with the winery we are going to introduce to you today? The winery is called Le Marognole and owes its name to these dry stone walls. Let’s discover together its secrets.

Opposites attract

Fabio and Eleonora run together the family winery Le Marognole. To describe this wonderful couple and their personalities, the old saying “opposites attract” turns out to be perfect! Fabio set up his own winery back in 2004, deciding to follow personally every single step from the grapes to the bottled wine. He is very hard working, always busy and completely committed to his work. Probably you will see him on his tractor, in his vineyards or in his cellar checking the health of the grapes or the wine making process. He is not a big talker, though, but no problem! It is his wife Eleonora who takes care of their guests. Smiling, kind and well prepared, she will guide you around the winery in a very professional yet friendly way, ending the tour with a great tasting. Their opposite personalities make a perfect combination, which makes their winery worth visiting.

3 reasons why we love them

There are many different reasons why we love this winery and we admire the great work they do. Here are just the top 3 reasons why we really like to collaborate with them:

The contrast between old and new: Even though the winery is pretty new, the entire business was built around a small jewel. It is the historical cellar built under the ground. Here small groups can also have their tasting. As a result the experience is just magical.

The wine tour they offer: Visiting Le Marognole means having a complete overview about Valpolicella wine making techniques and products. You will visit the wine cellar, the fruttaio, the barrels room, the historical cellar and the vineyards. After the visit you will sit down in front of 6 glasses of wine and some local cheese. Perfect, isn't it?

The view on their vineyards: Right after the end of the winery tour, you will have the possibility to have a look at their property. 6 hectares of vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella classica completely trained with the pergola system. You can take 5 minutes to inhale the true essence of Valpolicella, before starting with the tasting.

Their wine selection

Now let’s talk a little bit about the wines they produce. At Le Marognole you can taste the 4 most typical wines of Valpolicella, among which Amarone, plus 3 IGT wines. El Marascar is a fresh and pleasant rosè wine, Passito bianco is a white sweet dessert wine and last but not least El Nane. To produce it, which owes its name to Fabio’s grandpa Giovanni, the grapes are dried for about 100 days. The aging takes place in big oak barrels for about 2 years, resulting in a bold yet smooth wine which can hold a candle to some Amarone. Are you eager to taste their wines and discover more about these guys and their work? Then book a tour with us in the Valpolicella classica such as the Two Amarone wineries or the Three Amarone wineries. We are waiting for you.
