It may seem strange to some of you to hear us talking about harvesting in August, since it’s a topic we typically address every year in September, the grape harvest month par excellence in the Verona area. The reality is that we’re experiencing one of the hottest summers in the last twenty years, and the effects are clearly visible in the vineyards, with the grapes already at a very advanced stage of ripeness. Therefore, we’re starting to talk about bringing forward the start of the harvest to the end of August, even earlier than in recent seasons, when the grapes were harvested at the beginning of September, rather than in the second half of the same month, as usual.
The busiest time of the year for the wine world is almost upon us, but there is still little certainty about the 2026 vintage. Abnormal weather events have now become almost a regular occurrence, making forecasts difficult. For the 2026 wine season some of the most important Italian wine associations, Assoenologi, Ismea, and the Italian Wine Union (UIV) have therefore decided not to hold the traditional press conference dedicated to harvest forecasts. This decision stems from the desire to provide the most accurate and representative information possible regarding the season’s progress, but in a context characterized by such variable weather conditions, estimates made before the end of the harvest can change significantly. The press conference has therefore been postponed until the end of the harvest season, when it will be possible to provide a complete and reliable overview of production, grape quality, and the vintage’s main characteristics.
Just a few more weeks to wait and we’ll be able to truly evaluate the new vintage, which so far, despite the difficulties encountered in June with storms and hailstorms, and the intense heat of recent months, seems to be a good one. What’s certain is that, whatever the outcome of this season, our producers will be able to read the situation and bring quality products to our glasses, which sooner or later we’ll be able to savor with gusto.
