Tenute Falezza: appassimento docet!

Tenute Falezza: appassimento docet!

22 May 2020

Once upon a time Luigi, a kid of about six years old, lived with his family on the hills around Verona. Even if he was really young, he loved helping his mum and dad in the fields. The love for nature he had, grew every day more and he started to dream big. Are you curious to learn a bit more about his dream?

Granpa and grandchildren: the same passion

Day by day, Luigi, helping his family in the fields, learned first-hand the secrets of the vines. When he grew up and became a man, he finally decided to realize his dream. Therefore, he bought some land just outside Verona. That land was the milestone of Tenute Falezza, the family winery we are going to discover today. The winery, which is just 10 miles away from Verona city center, is indeed surrounded by the land Luigi bought back in 1974. Today, after more than 45 years, two young guys run the winery. They are Enrico and Barbara, who are Luigi’s grandchildren. Their roles in the winery are different yet complementary. Enrico follows the winemaking process in the wine cellar while Barbara takes care of guests, hospitality and sales. The siblings are for sure Luigi’s pride.

The winery

The name of this winery is Tenute Falezza. But what does it mean? Tenute litteraly means estates while Falezza is the last name of this family. The land around the winery is in fact just one of the three properties which make up its tenute. The other two lie further east in Mezzane and Marcellise valleys. All together the winery owes 12 hectars (approximately 30 acres) on the eastern hills around Verona. When it is harvest time, all the grapes are taken to the winery where they are processed from the crushing until the bottling. At Tenute Falezza you can therefore see all the production steps, guided by the amazing Barbara. The cornerstone of the winery is for sure the drying loft: a huge room where you can admire towers of crates where the grapes rest from October until January. The appassimento, that’s the name of the grapes’ resting process, is in fact the common thread of Falezza’s red wines. All of them, from the Valpolicella until the Amarone are indeed produced with dried grapes.

The tasting

After the winery tour, you can finally enjoy the tasting at Tenute Falezza. Barbara usually starts it with some warm bread covered with her olive oil. Around the winery there are some olive trees from which the family obtains a delicious olive oil. During the wine tasting you will discover Falezza's red wine production: from Ripasso, to their IGT Rosso dei Falezza and at the end Amarone and Recioto. In all their wines you can clearly recognize the influence of the appassimento, which make them bold, structured and intense. Before living the wine tasting room, you will also be delighted with a sip of Grappa di Amarone: a spirit obtained by fermenting the skin of the dried grapes used to produce Amarone. We love defining it "the end with a bang" after a wine tour in a fabulous winery. Would you like to discover and visit Tenute Falezza? Then join us for a Soave and Amarone or a Soave, Lunch and Amarone. Falezza’s family is waiting for you.
